John Stansell, retired from a life-long career as a church musician and concert organist, returned for this recital to Nashville, the city of his birth, and First Lutheran Church, where it all began. Early organ studies were with Peter Fyfe, after which he went to New York City to study under Vernon deTar at The Juilliard School. He holds Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from that institution, where he also studied with Leonard Raver. His doctoral paper concerned the stylistic interpretation of Felix Mendelssohn’s Six Sonatas for Organ.
His principal church positions were as Organist/Choirmaster at the United Methodist Church of Port Washington, Long Island, and Director of Music/Senior Organist at The First Congregational Church of Greenwich, Old Greenwich, Connecticut. For ten years he taught at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where he held the title of Organist-in-Residence. Dr. Stansell had an active concert career in Europe, particularly in Germany. He has two CD recordings to his credit, Mendelssohn & Co., and Mendelssohn – Six Sonatas for Organ, which were recorded in Frankfurt.
John and his life-partner Michael Pellegrino were about to celebrate their forty years together and five years as legally married when this recital was played. They maintain a residence in Stamford, Connecticut, and spend the winters in Naples, Florida, in their 5-wheel RV.
